Before we moved to the ranch, I went all out for Halloween. I actually won “Best Halloween Decorations” in our neighborhood two years in a row. So when we moved, I was disappointed that our mile long driveway and the scarcely populated town didn’t fare well for spooky décor or trick-or-treaters.

I have since stored away most of our Halloween decorations, and instead simply put out pumpkinsfunny pillow cases, gourds, and garland; little pieces of the season that can be left out for the entirety of November.

I don’t find myself using any of the black cat cutouts, spooky spiders, or hanging ghosts like I used to, but this year, I decided I would add small elements of Halloween with these DIY Halloween Votives without overdoing it.

I do love a wonderfully decorated Halloween house (whether ‘haunted’ or not), and find so much inspiration flipping through the pages of the seasonal catalogs at the grocery store. However, I would rather save the money for decorations that really speak to me (ie: everything Christmas). Finding inexpensive ways to dress up items I already have is my favorite way to decorate for holidays such as Halloween, St. Patty’s Day, and Valentine’s Day.

To make these votives, I reached for my favorite holiday crafting tool, my Cricut Explore Air?, and in about five minutes flat, I made half a dozen votives perfect for adorning my entryway. I love adding vinyl to glass because it can easily be removed, and is so incredibly versatile. I will be making similar versions for Christmas and all of the other holidays that I decorate for!

Step 1: Open up this file in the Cricut Design Studio.

Step 2: Load vinyl onto the cutting mat, load into your Cricut, and cut.

Step 3: Once finished, use scissors to cut each shape out into individual squares. Remove the surrounding excess vinyl and weed out any extra pieces with tweezers.

Step 4: Use your fingers or transfer tape to place the shapes onto the glass, and enjoy!

Make up a few to line up along the mantel, or just place a few around the house. It’;s just the touch of Halloween you need!?

The lacquered look may have originated in Eastern Asia thousands of years ago, but it is as popular as ever today. Much like toile or a Louis chair, lacquered furniture boasts a storied history of a style that has been endlessly reborn. Its true beauty lies in its resilience and versatility to adapt to the trends of the modern age—and that is precisely why we love it.
